IELTS Speaking Part 3 Answer Formula with Examples

IELTS Speaking Part 3 is different from Part 1. In Part 1, short personal answers are often enough. In Part 3, the examiner expects more developed answers about society, education, technology, work, culture, or the future. This is where many learners sound either too short or too memorised.

A useful IELTS Speaking Part 3 formula is: opinion, reason, contrast, example. You do not need to use all four parts every time, but the pattern helps you add depth without memorising full answers.

Why Part 3 answers need more depth

Part 3 questions are discussion questions. They often ask “Why?”, “How has this changed?”, “Do you think...?”, or “What are the advantages and disadvantages?” These questions test your ability to explain ideas, not just talk about yourself.

For example, if the question is “Do people in your country read fewer books now than in the past?”, a weak answer might be: “Yes, people read fewer books because they use phones.” This is understandable, but it finishes too quickly. It does not show enough reasoning or range.

A stronger answer develops the idea: “I think many people read fewer printed books now because mobile phones take up a lot of free time. However, that does not always mean people read less overall, because some people read articles, e-books, or posts online. For example, university students may not buy novels regularly, but they still read PDFs and online materials for study.”

Use opinion, reason, contrast, example

Start with a clear opinion. Do not delay your answer with long memorised introductions. “I think...” or “In my opinion...” is enough. Then give a reason that explains your view.

After that, add contrast if the topic allows it. Words like “however”, “on the other hand”, or “at the same time” help you show balance. Finally, give a simple example. The example can be from Bangladesh, student life, work, family, or everyday behaviour. It does not need to be a statistic.

Frame:

“I think... because... However... For example...”

Question: “Why do some people prefer online courses?”

Answer: “I think many people prefer online courses because they can study without travelling, which saves time and money. However, online learning requires discipline because there is no teacher physically present. For example, a job holder in Dhaka may find recorded lessons convenient after work, but they still need a routine to complete the lessons properly.”

This answer sounds planned, but not memorised. The structure guides your thinking while the language remains flexible.

When to get speaking feedback

A formula is helpful, but it cannot tell you everything. You may still have problems with pronunciation, grammar accuracy, fluency, or answer development. Some learners speak a lot but do not answer the question directly. Others have good ideas but pause too often.

To practise alone, choose one IELTS Speaking Part 3 question each day. Record your answer. Then listen and check four things: Did I give an opinion? Did I explain the reason? Did I add contrast where useful? Did I give an example? This self-check can improve awareness.

If you want a clearer diagnosis of your weak points, you can book a Paid Speaking Mock Evaluation. Feedback is especially useful when you do not know whether your answers sound natural, memorised, too short, or unclear.

Part 3 does not require perfect ideas. It requires developed ideas. Use the formula as a support, not a script. When you practise flexible answers, you become more confident in real discussion.
