21-Day IELTS Mock Test Preparation Plan
A mock test is useful only when you know what you want to learn from it. Many IELTS candidates take a mock suddenly, see a band score, feel happy or disappointed, and then return to random practice. That is not the best use of a mock test.
A better approach is to follow an IELTS mock test preparation plan before the test. The goal is not to become perfect in 21 days. The goal is to enter the mock with clearer skills, better timing, and a stronger idea of your current weaknesses.
Week 1: Repair the weakest skill first
In the first week, do not try to practise everything equally. Choose the skill that is creating the biggest score problem. For many Bangladeshi IELTS learners, this may be Reading speed, Listening spelling, Speaking fluency, or Writing structure.
Spend the first three or four days on focused repair. If Reading is weak, practise skimming, scanning, and question-type strategy. If Writing is weak, review paragraph structure and learn how to plan before writing. If Speaking is weak, record short answers and check whether you are giving complete responses. If Listening is weak, practise predicting word type before the audio starts.
At the end of the week, do one short timed section from that weak skill. Do not only check your score. Write down the mistake type. Did you lose marks because of vocabulary, timing, spelling, grammar, confusion, or panic?
Week 2: Practise under time pressure
The second week should feel more exam-like. This is when you start training your timing, not just your knowledge. Many learners know the answers during slow practice but fail when the clock is running. That means the problem is not only English level; it is also test control.
Use timed practice for each module. For Reading, complete a passage within a strict time limit. For Listening, practise without pausing the audio. For Writing, plan and write under real pressure. For Speaking, answer questions without restarting every time you make a mistake.
This week is also a good time to calculate your Listening and Reading bands after practice. You can use the IELTS Band Score Calculator to understand how your raw scores connect to band scores. This helps you see the gap between your current performance and your target band more clearly.
Week 3: Combine full sections and review properly
In the final week, your practice should become more complete. Do at least one full Listening section, one full Reading section, one timed Writing Task 2, and one Speaking practice session. The aim is to see how your performance changes when you are tired, pressured, or moving from one task to another.
Do not ignore review. A mock test without review only gives you a number. Review tells you what to fix next. Keep a simple mistake log with three columns: skill, mistake type, and next action. For example: Reading — missed True/False/Not Given because of keyword matching — practise identifying meaning, not only similar words.
If possible, get feedback on at least one Writing or Speaking performance before the mock. These are the areas where self-checking is difficult, because you may not notice your own grammar, organisation, pronunciation, or task response problems.
Take the mock like it is the real exam
At the end of 21 days, take a full mock in a serious environment. Do not take it while checking your phone, pausing between sections, or asking someone for help. The closer the mock feels to the real exam, the more useful the result becomes.
For computer-based IELTS candidates, format matters too. You need to be comfortable typing, reading on screen, managing time digitally, and moving between questions. A realistic computer-based mock can help you experience that before the real exam.
When you are ready, you can book a computer-based IELTS mock through the Computer-Based IELTS Mock Exam Portal. After the mock, do not only ask, “What band did I get?” Ask, “What should I fix before the real test?” That question is what turns a mock into a study plan.
