A, An, The: Simple Article Rules for English Learners

Articles are small words, but they often create big confusion for English learners in Bangladesh. Many students can write long sentences but still feel unsure about a, an, and the. The good news is that article use becomes easier when you understand the idea behind each word.

The Main Difference

Use a or an when you are talking about one thing, but not a specific one.

  • I need a pen.
  • She is an honest student.

Here, the listener does not know exactly which pen or which student. You mean any one.

Use the when both the speaker and listener know the exact person or thing.

  • I met a student yesterday. The student wants to prepare for IELTS.

First, the student is new information. After that, the student becomes specific.

A or An?

The choice depends on sound, not spelling. Use an before a vowel sound.

  • an apple
  • an hour
  • a university
  • a useful book

“Hour” starts with a vowel sound, so we say an hour. “University” starts with a “yu” sound, so we say a university.

Why Learners Make Mistakes

Many Bangla sentences do not need articles in the same way English sentences do. So learners often translate directly and write sentences like:

  • I bought book.
  • Teacher explained lesson.

In English, these usually need articles:

  • I bought a book.
  • The teacher explained the lesson.

A Simple Practice Method

When you write a sentence, ask yourself two questions:

  1. Am I talking about one general thing? Use a/an.
  2. Am I talking about a specific thing? Use the.

For example:

  • I watched a video about IELTS writing.
  • The video was very helpful.

This pattern is common in stories, essays, and everyday conversation.

A Helpful Next Step

If you often feel unsure about articles, prepositions, or basic grammar, you can check your current level first using the Free English Level Assessment Tool. It can help you understand whether you need beginner grammar revision or IELTS-level practice.

Final Advice

Do not try to memorize every article rule at once. Start with the basic idea: a/an = one general thing, the = specific thing. Then notice articles while reading short English texts. Over time, your grammar will feel more natural.

If your foundation needs a more structured path, the Recorded Pre-IELTS and IELTS Courses can help you revise grammar step by step at home.
