Cope With or Cope Up With: Which Is Correct?
Many Bangladeshi learners say “cope up with” because it sounds natural in local English conversation. You may hear people say, “I can’t cope up with pressure,” or “She is trying to cope up with her studies.” The problem is that in standard English, especially in IELTS Speaking and Writing, the correct phrase is cope with. So the better sentence is: “I can’t cope with pressure.”
This is a small correction, but it matters because common preposition mistakes can make an otherwise clear sentence sound unnatural. The good news is that this phrase is easy to fix once you learn it as one complete chunk: cope with something.
The correct phrase is “cope with”
The verb cope means to manage a difficult situation, pressure, pain, workload, stress, or change. It already carries the meaning of dealing with difficulty, so it needs with after it when you mention the thing being managed. You do not need to add up.
Here are some natural examples:
- I can’t cope with this much pressure.
- Many students struggle to cope with exam stress.
- She is learning to cope with her new job.
- IELTS candidates must cope with time pressure in Reading and Writing.
Notice that the structure is simple: cope with + noun phrase. The noun phrase can be “pressure,” “stress,” “a problem,” “a difficult schedule,” or “the demands of university life.”
Why “cope up with” feels familiar but sounds wrong
“Cope up with” is common in South Asian English, so many learners use it without realising it may sound incorrect to international listeners. This happens because learners often translate ideas from Bangla or copy phrases they hear around them. In daily conversation, people may still understand you. But in academic writing, formal speaking, interviews, and IELTS, it is safer to use the standard form.
The mistake also happens because English has many verbs that do use up: catch up with, keep up with, put up with, come up with. These are correct phrases, but they do not make cope up with correct. English prepositions are often fixed. You cannot always build them logically by adding a familiar word.
Compare these phrases:
- Correct: I need to catch up with the class.
- Correct: I can’t keep up with the speed.
- Correct: I have to put up with noise.
- Correct: I can’t cope with pressure.
Learning them as fixed expressions is usually better than trying to guess the preposition every time.
IELTS-friendly ways to use this phrase
In IELTS Speaking, you may use cope with when talking about study, work, stress, technology, family responsibilities, or city life. The phrase is useful because it sounds natural and flexible.
For example, if the examiner asks, “Do students in your country feel pressure?” you could say: “Yes, many students have to cope with pressure from exams, family expectations, and future career plans.”
In Writing Task 2, you can use it in a more formal sentence: “Young people often find it difficult to cope with academic pressure and financial uncertainty at the same time.”
Do not overuse the phrase, but keep it ready for situations involving difficulty or pressure. It is much better than writing something unnatural like “cope up with study pressure.”
A simple practice task
Correct these sentences:
- Many employees cannot cope up with long working hours.
- Students need support to cope up with exam anxiety.

The corrected versions are:
