How to Paraphrase IELTS Writing Task 2 Questions Without Changing Meaning

How to Paraphrase IELTS Writing Task 2 Questions Without Changing Meaning

Many IELTS candidates think paraphrasing means replacing every word in the question with a more difficult synonym. That is a dangerous idea. In IELTS Writing Task 2, paraphrasing is useful only when the meaning stays accurate. If your introduction changes the question, your essay may start in the wrong direction from the first sentence.

For example, the question may say: “Some people believe advertising encourages unnecessary spending.” A bad paraphrase would be: “Advertising always forces people to buy useless things.” This is not just a new version of the sentence. It changes the meaning. Some people believe becomes a strong fact, encourages becomes forces, and unnecessary spending becomes useless things.

Paraphrasing is not synonym replacement

The biggest problem with IELTS paraphrasing is careless synonym use. Some words look similar but do not carry the same meaning. For example, children, teenagers, and young people are not always the same. Government, authority, and society are not always interchangeable. Cause, influence, and force also have different strengths.

A safe paraphrase keeps the original idea but changes the wording or structure. Instead of trying to change every word, focus on changing only what you can control accurately.

Original: “Some people believe advertising encourages unnecessary spending.”

Better paraphrase: “It is argued that advertisements can lead people to spend money on things they do not really need.”

This version changes the structure and some vocabulary, but it keeps the meaning. It does not exaggerate the claim.

Change structure before you change key meaning words

One of the safest ways to paraphrase is to change the sentence structure. You can move from active to passive, use a noun phrase, or change the order of ideas. This helps you avoid risky synonyms.

For example:

Original: “Many people think governments should invest more money in public transport.”

Possible paraphrase: “It is often argued that more government funding should be directed towards public transport.”

Here, the structure changes, but the meaning is still close. The paraphrase does not suddenly say “all people,” “private companies,” or “free transport.”

Another example:

Original: “Some parents allow their children to use smartphones from a very young age.”

Possible paraphrase: “In some families, children are given access to smartphones at an early age.”

Again, the sentence is different, but the idea remains accurate. This is what IELTS paraphrasing should do.

Be careful with IELTS question words

Some words in IELTS questions are very important because they control the task. Words like some, many, all, should, must, can, may, advantages, disadvantages, causes, and solutions should be handled carefully.

If the question says “some people,” do not paraphrase it as “everyone.” If it says “may cause problems,” do not write “definitely destroys society.” If it asks for “advantages and disadvantages,” do not turn the essay into only an opinion essay.

Your introduction should show the examiner that you understand the question clearly. A simple accurate paraphrase is much better than a complicated sentence that changes the task.

A simple practice method

When practising Task 2, write two versions of your introduction. First, write a safe version that only changes structure. Then, write a slightly more advanced version using synonyms, but check whether every meaning is still accurate.

You can use this checklist:

  • Did I keep the same topic?
  • Did I keep the same strength of meaning?
  • Did I avoid adding new ideas?
  • Did I avoid changing the task type?
  • Does the sentence still sound natural?

For more IELTS Writing practice, you can use random prompts from the Essay Writing Practice Tool and focus only on paraphrasing the question before writing the full essay. If you later need correction, paid essay feedback can help you see whether your introduction, structure, and argument are actually clear.

Good paraphrasing is not about showing off vocabulary. It is about showing accurate understanding in natural English.
