IELTS Listening Spelling Names: How to Handle Corrections

Spelling names in IELTS Listening looks simple until the speaker corrects a letter. You may hear a name, start writing it, and then miss the correction that comes immediately after. In the real test, the answer you write must be the final confirmed spelling, not the first version you heard. That is why IELTS Listening spelling names practice should include corrections, not only the alphabet.

This skill is useful for names, addresses, postcodes, reference numbers, email addresses, and booking details. The key is to listen for correction signals such as sorry, not, that’s, I mean, and double.

Write the final version, not the first version

Imagine the audio says: “It’s L-O-P-E-S, sorry, L-O-P-E-Z.” The correct final answer is LOPEZ, not LOPES. A student who writes quickly but stops listening may lose the mark even though they heard most of the letters correctly.

IELTS Listening often includes this type of real-life correction because people naturally correct names and details in conversations. A hotel receptionist, university officer, or caller may spell something and then fix one part. Your job is to follow the final version.

Train yourself not to relax after the first spelling. Keep listening until the speaker moves on clearly to the next detail. The correction may come after only one second.

Listen for correction words

Certain words warn you that the answer may change. When you hear them, check your spelling immediately.

Common correction signals include:

• sorry
• no, not...
• I mean...
• that’s...
• double...
• actually...
• let me spell that again

For example: “The surname is Clark, C-L-A-R-K. Sorry, it’s Clarke with an E at the end.” The final answer is CLARKE.

Another example: “The code is A-F-1-5, no, A-F-5-1.” The final answer is AF51.

In names, one letter can change the whole answer. In codes, the order of letters and numbers matters. Do not only listen for sounds; listen for the speaker’s correction pattern.

Be careful with double letters and similar sounds

Some letters sound similar, especially when the audio is fast or the accent is unfamiliar. B, D, P, T, C, E, G, and V can confuse learners. Double letters can also create mistakes.

If the speaker says “double L,” you should write LL, not one L. If the speaker says “M-A-T-T-H-E-W,” make sure you do not miss the double T sound or add an extra letter from habit.

Names may also have different spellings from what you expect. For example, Steven and Stephen sound similar, but the spelling is different. Sara and Sarah may also be corrected in the audio. Do not rely only on the spelling you already know. Follow the letters given in the recording.

Practise with short correction drills

You do not need a full Listening test every time. A useful short drill is to practise ten names or codes where three or four include corrections. Play the audio once, write the answer, then check whether you wrote the final spelling.

You can also create your own practice with a friend. Ask them to spell a name, correct one letter, and then confirm the final version. For example: “It’s R-A-H-I-M, sorry, R-A-H-E-M.” This trains your ear to stay active after the first answer.

After each mistake, ask: did I miss a correction word, confuse similar letters, or stop listening too early? This reflection is more useful than simply marking the answer wrong.
