IELTS Writing Task 2 Body Paragraph Checklist with Examples
A strong IELTS Writing Task 2 essay does not depend only on big vocabulary. Very often, the problem is simpler: the body paragraph is not clearly built. The idea may be good, but the examiner cannot follow how it connects to the question.
An IELTS body paragraph checklist helps you review the paragraph before you write more. For most Task 2 essays, a useful body paragraph has four parts: a clear topic sentence, explanation, example, and link back to the question. Many teachers call this TEEL: Topic sentence, Explain, Example, Link.
The four parts of a strong body paragraph
The topic sentence tells the reader the main idea of the paragraph. It should answer the question directly, not introduce a completely new topic. For example, if the essay asks whether governments should reduce plastic waste, your topic sentence might say: “One effective way to reduce plastic pollution is for governments to limit single-use plastic products.”
The explanation then shows why your idea is logical. This is where many learners stop too early. They write one sentence and move to the next idea. Instead, explain the cause, result, or reason behind your point. After that, add a relevant example. The example does not need to be a statistic or a real research finding. It can be a realistic situation, such as supermarkets using paper bags or customers bringing reusable bottles.
Finally, link the paragraph back to the question. This does not mean repeating the same words mechanically. It means showing how your paragraph supports your overall answer.
Weak paragraph vs improved paragraph
Weak version:
“Plastic is bad for the environment. Many people use plastic bags. The government should do something. This will help the country.”
This paragraph has a general idea, but it is too thin. The writer does not explain what the government should do, why the solution works, or how it connects to the essay question. It sounds like a list of simple opinions.
Improved version:
“One effective way to reduce plastic pollution is for governments to limit single-use plastic products. These items are often used for only a few minutes, but they can remain in the environment for a long time and block drains, harm animals, or pollute rivers. For example, if supermarkets are encouraged to charge for plastic bags and offer affordable reusable alternatives, many customers will slowly change their habits. As a result, government regulation can reduce unnecessary plastic use while guiding people toward more responsible choices.”
Notice the structure. The first sentence gives the main idea. The next sentence explains the problem. The example is practical. The final sentence links the idea to the question.
Use this checklist before moving on
Before you finish a body paragraph, ask yourself four questions:
- Did I write one clear main idea?
- Did I explain why this idea matters?
- Did I give a relevant example or situation?
- Did I connect the paragraph back to the essay question?
If the answer is “no” to any of these, the paragraph probably needs more development. Do not add a second main idea just to make the paragraph longer. A focused paragraph with one well-explained idea is usually stronger than a crowded paragraph with three weak ideas.
After Eid or any study break, this checklist is a simple way to restart writing practice. Choose one Task 2 question, write only one body paragraph, and test it with TEEL. You do not have to write a full essay every time. Sometimes improving one paragraph properly teaches you more than rushing through a complete essay with the same old mistakes.
