Better Words Than Good: Vocabulary Choices for Bangla Speakers

Bangla speakers often translate “bhalo” as “good”. Sometimes that is correct. But if you use “good” for every situation, your English can sound flat. A good teacher, a good phone, a good plan, and a good person do not mean the same kind of “good”. Learning better words than good helps you express your meaning more clearly.

This is especially useful for IELTS Writing and Speaking, but it also matters in everyday English. Strong vocabulary is not about using rare words. It is about choosing the right word for the exact situation.

“Good” is not wrong, but it is often too general

The word “good” is useful. You do not need to remove it from your English. The problem starts when “good” becomes your only adjective. Many learners say “good” because they know the Bangla meaning in their head but cannot quickly choose a more precise English word.

For example, “a good teacher” may mean a helpful teacher, a patient teacher, a knowledgeable teacher, or an inspiring teacher. Each word gives a different picture. If you say “a helpful teacher”, the listener understands the quality more clearly.

Similarly, “a good plan” may be an effective plan, a realistic plan, or a practical plan. “A good phone” may be a reliable phone, an affordable phone, or a durable phone. The better word depends on what you are trying to praise.

Choose the adjective from the context

Instead of asking, “What is the English of bhalo?” ask, “What kind of bhalo do I mean?” That question will improve your vocabulary choices.

Look at these examples:

  • A bhalo teacher = a helpful / patient / experienced teacher
  • A bhalo plan = an effective / practical / realistic plan
  • A bhalo phone = a reliable / durable / affordable phone
  • A bhalo movie = an enjoyable / meaningful / entertaining movie
  • A bhalo result = a strong / impressive / satisfactory result
  • A bhalo friend = a kind / loyal / supportive friend

This method also helps in IELTS. If you say, “This is a good solution,” the sentence is correct but basic. If you say, “This is a practical solution,” the meaning becomes clearer. If you say, “This is a cost-effective solution,” it becomes even more specific, if that is what you mean.

Do not replace “good” randomly with advanced words. “Magnificent” is not always better. “Beneficial” does not fit every noun. Precision matters more than difficulty.

Build word groups, not isolated lists

Many learners memorise vocabulary like a dictionary: good = beneficial, excellent, wonderful, great. This creates another problem. Words that look similar in a list may not fit the same sentence. A “beneficial teacher” sounds unnatural in most contexts, but a “beneficial habit” sounds fine.

A better method is to learn words with nouns and examples. For instance:

  • effective plan
  • reliable device
  • supportive friend
  • enjoyable experience
  • practical advice
  • impressive performance

When you learn vocabulary in small word groups, you are more likely to use it correctly in speaking and writing. This is also helpful for collocations, which are natural word combinations.

Practise one Bangla word in many English contexts

Take one common Bangla word like “bhalo” and write five English sentences using different meanings. Do not use “good” in the first draft. Then check whether each adjective fits the noun.

Example:

  • My teacher is very patient.
  • This plan is realistic.
  • The internet connection is reliable.
  • The movie was enjoyable.
  • Her advice was practical.

If vocabulary is your weak area, the VocabPix Vocabulary App can help you learn words with images, examples, collocations, synonyms, antonyms, and word families. That kind of context is more useful than memorising translation pairs only.

The next time you want to say “good”, pause for one second. Ask yourself what type of good you mean. That small pause can make your English much more precise.
