How to Write a Clear Thesis Statement for IELTS Writing Task 2

A strong IELTS Writing Task 2 thesis statement tells the reader exactly what your essay will argue. Many learners in Bangladesh write long introductions with general background sentences, but the main opinion remains unclear. As a result, the essay may look formal, yet the examiner cannot easily follow the writer’s position.

For opinion essays, your goal is simple: answer the question directly and preview the main reason or reasons you will explain in the body paragraphs.

A thesis statement is not a long background

The thesis statement is usually the final sentence of your introduction. It should not repeat the whole question, give a memorised quote, or start a broad lecture about society. If the question asks, “To what extent do you agree or disagree?” the reader needs to know your position.

A vague thesis might say: “This essay will discuss both sides and give a logical conclusion.” This sentence does not show your opinion. It also sounds like a memorised template.

A clearer thesis says: “I partly agree because online learning offers flexibility, but classroom learning is still better for direct feedback.” Now the reader knows your position and can predict the essay structure.

A simple formula for opinion essays

Use this frame when you are practising opinion essays: “I strongly/partly agree because X and Y.” You can adjust it depending on the question. The formula is not for memorising every essay. It is for training your thinking.

Question: “Some people think online learning is better than classroom learning. To what extent do you agree?”

Possible thesis 1: “I partly agree because online learning is convenient for busy students, although classroom learning provides stronger interaction.”

Possible thesis 2: “I strongly disagree because classroom learning gives students immediate feedback and a more disciplined study environment.”

Both thesis statements are clear because they answer the question and give direction. Before writing your body paragraphs, check whether each paragraph connects to the thesis. If your thesis mentions flexibility and feedback, your body paragraphs should explain those ideas. This connection helps your essay feel planned, not like separate ideas placed together. For Bangladeshi learners who translate ideas from Bangla first, this step is especially useful because it forces the English argument to become clear before the full essay begins.

Test your thesis before writing the body

A useful test is to ask: Can I write two body paragraphs from this thesis? If the answer is no, your thesis may be too vague. For example, “Education is very important in modern life” is true, but it does not help you build an IELTS essay.

Another test is to remove unnecessary words. Many learners write, “In my personal opinion, I believe that I agree with this statement.” You only need one clear position: “I agree that...” or “I partly agree because...”

To build this habit, choose one prompt and write only the introduction. Then underline the thesis statement. You can practise with the Essay Writing Practice Tool and generate a random prompt when you need a new topic.

A clear thesis saves time because it gives your essay a direction before you start writing the body. In Task 2, clarity is often more powerful than a long, impressive-looking introduction. Keep the reader’s job easy from the beginning.
