Information or Informations? Uncountable Nouns Explained

Many English learners say “informations” because the idea feels countable in Bangla. You may have one information, two information, many information in your mind. But in standard English, the correct form is usually information, not “informations”. This is why the question information or informations appears so often among Bangladeshi learners.

The same problem happens with words like advice, furniture, equipment, and homework. These words can describe many things, but English normally treats them as uncountable nouns. That means you do not add “s” to make them plural.

Why “information” does not take plural -s

Some English nouns are countable. You can say one book, two books, three books. Some nouns are uncountable. They refer to a general idea, material, or category, so they do not usually take a plural form. “Information” belongs to this second group.

So you should say:

  • I need more information.
  • The teacher gave us useful information.
  • This website has a lot of information about IELTS.

You should not say:

  • I need informations.
  • The teacher gave us many informations.
  • This website has useful informations.

The mistake is understandable. In Bangla, we may think of separate pieces of information. English can express that, but it uses a different structure.

Use “pieces of information” when you need counting

If you want to count information, use a piece of information or two pieces of information. This makes the meaning countable without changing the noun itself.

For example:

  • I need one piece of information before I decide.
  • The article gave me three useful pieces of information.
  • Can you share a little more information about the course?

Notice the difference between “more information” and “many informations”. “More information” is correct because “more” can work with uncountable nouns. “Many” usually works with countable plural nouns, so it does not fit directly with “information”.

This rule may feel small, but it can improve your writing quickly. Instead of writing, “There are many informations about this topic,” write, “There is a lot of information about this topic.”

Other common uncountable nouns

“Information” is not the only word that creates this problem. Many learners add “s” to uncountable nouns because they are thinking in Bangla first.

Here are some common examples:

  • advice, not advices
  • furniture, not furnitures
  • equipment, not equipments
  • homework, not homeworks
  • research, not researches in most general uses
  • news, not newses

Correct examples:

  • My teacher gave me helpful advice.
  • We bought new furniture.
  • The lab has modern equipment.
  • I have a lot of homework today.
  • This is useful research.

If you need to count them, use phrases like a piece of advice, two items of furniture, or several pieces of equipment. These phrases may sound longer, but they are natural.

Practise the pattern in your own sentences

To fix this mistake, do not only memorise a list. Write five sentences with uncountable nouns you often use. Then check whether you added unnecessary “s”. Try writing about your real life: study, work, IELTS preparation, or university.

For example: “I need more information about the exam format.” “My teacher gave me useful advice about speaking.” “I need better equipment for online classes.” These sentences are simple, but they are accurate.

The main rule is clear: do not say “informations”. Say “information” for the general noun, and “pieces of information” when you need to count separate points.
