How to Pronounce Environment and Development for IELTS Speaking
“Environment” and “development” are useful academic words for IELTS Speaking, especially when you discuss cities, pollution, education, technology, or the economy. Many learners know the meanings of these words but feel unsure when saying them aloud.
Environment pronunciation can be tricky because the spelling looks long and the middle sounds are not always obvious. Development pronunciation also causes problems because learners may stress the wrong syllable or add extra sounds. The solution is to break each word into syllables and practise the stressed part clearly.
Break long words into syllables
Long words become easier when you stop seeing them as one large block. Break “environment” like this:
en-VAI-ruhn-ment
The main stress is on “VAI.” You do not need to pronounce every written letter strongly. Many learners try to say the word exactly as it is spelled, which can make it heavy and unclear. Practise it slowly first: en-VAI-ruhn-ment. Then put it into a sentence: “Plastic waste can damage the environment.”
Now look at “development”:
di-VEL-up-ment
The main stress is on “VEL.” A common mistake is to make the first syllable too strong or to pronounce every part equally. Instead, make “VEL” clearer than the other syllables: di-VEL-up-ment. Then practise: “Economic development should not harm the environment.”
You do not need complicated phonetic symbols to start. Syllable blocks and stress marks are enough for everyday practice.
Why stress matters in IELTS Speaking
In IELTS Speaking, pronunciation is about clarity, not copying a native accent. You can have a Bangladeshi accent and still speak clearly. The problem starts when stress is so different that familiar words become difficult to recognise.
If you say “environment” with equal stress on every syllable, the word may sound flat or unnatural. If you stress the wrong part of “development,” the listener may still guess the meaning, but your speech can sound less controlled. When several academic words are mispronounced in one answer, your overall clarity becomes weaker.
Stress also helps fluency. When you know how to say a word, you hesitate less. Many candidates pause before long words because they are not sure how to pronounce them. That pause can make the whole answer feel less confident. Practising pronunciation before the test reduces this problem.
Use these words in common IELTS answers. For example: “In my opinion, environmental protection should be part of urban development.” This sentence gives you practice with both word families and natural rhythm.
Practise with short sentences
Do not practise pronunciation only by repeating single words. Start with the word, then move quickly to short sentences. This helps your mouth learn the rhythm of real speaking.
Try these examples:
- “The environment is affected by pollution.”
- “Sustainable development is important for future generations.”
- “Rapid development can create traffic and housing problems.”
- “People should take more responsibility for the environment.”
Record yourself once and listen for the stressed syllable. Are you making “VAI” clear in environment? Are you making “VEL” clear in development? If not, slow down and repeat.
You can also connect this with vocabulary practice. Learn related forms like “environmental,” “develop,” “developed,” and “developing.” Each form may have its own rhythm, so do not assume the pronunciation stays exactly the same.
The aim is simple: when you use academic vocabulary, the examiner should understand it easily. Break the word, stress the right syllable, practise it in a sentence, and then use it naturally in your IELTS Speaking answers.
