Why Your IELTS Writing Band Is Stuck: Task Response Problems
If your IELTS Writing band stuck problem keeps happening after many essays, grammar may not be the only reason. Many learners in Bangladesh practise Task 2 again and again, correct a few grammar errors, and still receive almost the same score. That can feel unfair, but often the deeper issue is Task Response.
Task Response is about how well you answer the question. It looks at whether your position is clear, whether you address all parts of the task, and whether your ideas are developed enough. A clean sentence cannot save an essay that does not fully answer the question.
When grammar is not the main reason
Grammar matters, but it is easier to notice than Task Response. If a teacher marks “wrong tense” or “article mistake”, the problem feels clear. But when the essay has a weak position or incomplete ideas, students may not understand why the score is not moving.
For example, an agree/disagree essay may contain good vocabulary but never clearly say how far the writer agrees. A problem-solution essay may list causes but give very weak solutions. A discussion essay may describe both views but forget to give the writer’s own opinion properly.
These are not small surface mistakes. They affect the whole essay. That is why a student can write many grammatically acceptable sentences and still feel stuck.
Task Response problems that appear again and again
One common problem is answering only part of the question. If the task asks for causes and solutions, both parts need enough attention. If it asks whether advantages outweigh disadvantages, you cannot simply list both sides equally and stop there.
Another problem is unclear position. Some learners write “I partly agree” because it sounds safe, but they never explain exactly which part they agree with. The essay then becomes balanced but weak.
Idea development is also important. A paragraph should not just make a claim. It should explain the claim, give a relevant example or situation, and connect back to the question. If your example is too personal, too vague, or not clearly connected, the paragraph may feel underdeveloped.
Unsupported claims are another issue. Sentences like “This will improve society” or “This is very harmful” need explanation. IELTS Writing does not reward big claims just because they sound serious.
How structured feedback makes the problem visible
When learners self-check their essays, they often look for grammar first. That is useful, but it is not enough if the real weakness is Task Response. Structured IELTS essay feedback should show whether the essay answers all parts, whether the position is clear, and whether the paragraph ideas are developed logically.
Good feedback should not simply say, “Improve ideas.” It should show where the answer becomes unclear. For example: “Your second body paragraph explains a benefit, but it does not connect back to whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.” That kind of comment gives you something specific to fix.
If you want detailed correction, you can submit an essay for Paid Essay Feedback and focus especially on Task Response, not only grammar. This does not guarantee a band score, but it can help you see the real pattern behind repeated mistakes.
Before you write another essay
Take one essay you have already written and ask three questions. Did I answer every part of the task? Is my opinion clear from introduction to conclusion? Does each body paragraph explain one main idea properly?
If the answer is no, do not rush to write five more essays. Rewrite the plan first. A stronger plan often improves the essay more than adding difficult vocabulary.
When your IELTS Writing band is stuck, the solution is not always “write more.” Sometimes the better step is to diagnose the exact weakness. If Task Response is the problem, your next improvement should begin with clearer answers, stronger development, and feedback that shows you what to change.
