How to Write a Counterargument in IELTS Writing Task 2

An IELTS Writing Task 2 counterargument can make your essay sound more mature, but it can also create a problem. Many learners try to “show both sides” and accidentally make their own opinion unclear. The examiner should not finish your essay wondering, “So what does this writer actually believe?”

A counterargument is not a full opposite essay inside your essay. It is a short moment where you admit that the other side has some value, then return to your main position. For IELTS learners, the safest approach is often one controlled concession sentence, not a long debate.

Use counterarguments to support your position, not replace it

A counterargument works best when it shows judgment. You are saying, “I understand the other side, but my position is still this.” That is different from changing your opinion halfway through the essay.

For example, imagine the question is about whether online classes are better than classroom learning. If your position is that classroom learning is better for weaker learners, you can still admit that online classes are flexible. This does not weaken your opinion if you quickly connect it back to your main argument.

The danger comes when students write one paragraph for online classes, one paragraph for classroom classes, and never explain which side they support. Balance is useful, but IELTS Writing Task 2 still needs a clear answer to the question.

A simple concession pattern that keeps control

One reliable sentence pattern is: “Although + opposing point, main position.” You can also use “While” in the same way. The first part admits a limited truth. The second part shows your real opinion.

For example: “Although online classes are flexible, they may not provide enough direct correction for weaker learners.” This sentence shows both sides, but the position is not confusing. The writer accepts flexibility, then explains the limitation.

Another useful pattern is: “It is true that…, however…”. For example: “It is true that self-study gives learners freedom; however, students with weak grammar often need guided correction.” This kind of concession sentence IELTS learners can use because it is short, controlled, and connected to the essay argument.

Sample sentences you can adapt

Here are a few models. Do not memorise them word for word. Notice how each sentence admits one point and then returns to the main position.

• Although living abroad can improve speaking confidence, it does not automatically build academic writing skills.
• While technology makes learning more convenient, it cannot fully replace teacher feedback for beginners.
• It is true that strict school rules can limit freedom; however, some rules are necessary for discipline and safety.
• Although public transport can be crowded, it is still a more practical option than private cars in many large cities.

These sentences are useful because they do not open too many ideas. A weak counterargument tries to explain everything. A strong one only gives enough balance to make your position reasonable.

Practise the sentence before writing the full essay

Before writing a full essay, choose one Task 2 question and write three concession sentences. Then check one thing: does your position stay clear after the comma or after “however”? If the answer is no, rewrite the second half.
